Association des producteurs de PIQUI d’Araripe – Ceara

Each year, when the fruits of the piquizeiro are ripe, whole families come and settle for 4 months near Araripe to do the fruit harvest. The oil extracted from the pulp of the piqui is used as a basis for a lot of regional dishes. Its properties are recognised by the local traditional medicine.
An association was recently created to defend the rights of these workers and enable them to sell their production at fairer prices. Thanks to this association, the workers have introduced quality standards for the extraction of the oil and now wish to export it. The cosmetics industry is indeed more and more interested in using this oil in various preparations.
